Scott's (by J.Deere) lawn-tractor transaxle problem

Jere | We have a Scotts Mdl. 1642H lawn tractor (built by John Deere) which runs & mows great, just doesn't GO! The shifter is 'stuck' in neutral, can't get it into forward or reverse. Although the rear axles both spin freely when off the ground, the wheels are locked and we can't even push the tractor.. The linkages appear to be in good order. The knob is missing from the Push/Pull 'free-wheel' bar at the rear of the machine, but I can easily push-in or pull-out using a set of pliers to grip the control-rod. Local J/D parts desk advised $500. to replace the transaxle and the tractors not worth that.. But since it's in otherwise good shape I'd like to try to fix it myself if I can. Any suggestions on what to check or look for in this hydrostatic transmission? It's a sealed unit so there's no way to check inside for fluid level or trans. oil., and no way to add any either. |

Jere | (Joe, you there?) ANybody got Any ideas for me? How about a place that would sell used Tuff-Torq transaxles (J.Deere is too expensive). Thanks, Jere |
bontai Joe | I have never had to work on one of these so I have little first hand knowlege to pass on. Here is the link to Tuff Torq's website: http://www.tufftorq.com/ You might figure out something there. |
Chip | I have same exact problem on 1999 Scott's 2546. Have you found an answer? |
Jimmy | My Boss has a nearly new Scott's. Very nice mower. Has 100 hours without service. He keeps saying his neighbor can change the oil. I tell him there is more to it than that. It needs to be serviced properly. I have a prematurly deceased Poulan that the neighbor 'serviced' and hate to see this one go to the same grave. I know it will die when I'm on it and it will be my fault. Where is the closest authorized service shop to Rockmart, Georgia, and do you know what all they do to it? (besides change the oil). Thanks |
Jere | We got this FIXED!! Wasn't the transaxle but instead was parking-brake which locks the shifter when the brake is set. Brake-handle was bent (we bent it back) and rusted-shut (sprayed on a little mystery-oil and let it set awhile)and now it works great, no shifting problems. FYI: I sent 12 emails to different Scotts service-shops throughout New England (listed on Scotts website) and got 8 replies, and 7 of them suggested we check the parking-brake. Sure enough, they were right. My ol' daddy used to say that 'Please' and 'Thank You' don't cost you anything; he was right! And all of those service-guys that took the time and replied to me got a big 'Thank You' for taking the time to help us out. They saved us money, and saved us from throwing away an otherwise good machine. |
gary | I have a 1999 Scott's 2546 mower which the transaxle began making an unusual noise and stop pulling. At first thought the Turf Torq K51A transaxle needed replacing. After removing the transaxle found the pulley splines were stripped but the transaxle shaft splines okay. The pulley cost around $60 from a John Deere dealer. Certainly cheaper than a $486 transaxle from the John Deere dealer! |
mearl ashley | I HAVE A SCOTTS MODEL MO1742S MOWER. IT HAS A 5-SPEED TRANS AXLE MADE BY SPICER. MODEL NO. 4360-134. WHAT I NEED TO NO IS WHEN I GO TO REPLACE THE REAR END HOW DO T I GO ABOUT TELLING WHAT GEAR IT IS IN? THANK YOU MEARL |

Linda | Help.I turned off the engine and it went itself into the brake position while engine still running. Then took off the brake and continued. Turned off the engine again and it went back to the position of brake while running and now it will not release. The brake release moves but the brakes are locked which of course the transmission will not work either. Tried to override to push back to garage and it is locked..help.I can't afford to take to a shop. Many thank..Linda |

parker castonge | i completely disassembled my scotts by jd 2554 k66r transaxle, couldnt see anything wrong except clogged filters,i cleaned and reassembled, added synth 5w50 and it worked better but not good enough, removed some oil and added lucas transmission slip stopper and it got a lot better but still not perfect.i think any oil is probaly ok if the pump pistons and hydraulic rotary pump is not worn like mine is after 10 years, $1500.00 is to much for a transaxle, does anyone know where to get a rebuild kit?? |
Jay Stabler | My Scotts 1642 mower transaxle appears to have failed. The mower will move forward slowly and rough. My repair shop says that it's the rear-end which is a Tuff Torg 55. What are my options as the motor runs perfectly. |

How to install classic mode on mac os x 10 11.
Hello, this is my first post on this forum, thanks in advance for your help. I recently bought my first garden tractor, a used Scott's John Deere S2554, 25 HP, 54' mowing deck. The front left tire was already bubbled and developed leak after first use. I took the wheel off to take to local shop to replace the tire, and of course with the age of the tractor, I also realized the front wheel bushing and wheel spindle were badly worn. I bought replacement parts, and installed the spindle with no issues, but the bushing I was going to upgrade to sealed bearings part number AM127304. However, this does not seem to be the correct size, it won't slide onto the spindle. Does anyone have experience with this model and upgrading the bushing to sealed bearings, or do I need to stick with bushings for the front wheels? Thanks a lot!
